Join us as renowned coral reef scientist Nancy Knowlton shares her odyssey of moving from a state of pessimism to optimism about the ocean s future. Knowlton is the Sant Chair for Marine Science at the National Museum of Natural History and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

The diversity of life in the ocean has fascinated ocean scientists for centuries. Discoveries of new species and ecosystems continue to this day, but they are increasingly joined by reports of ever more dire threats to ocean life. In the last decade, however, a new focus on solutions has emerged.

This program is offered in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Sant Ocean Hall. The hall, which opened in 2008, is founded on the museum's unparalleled collection (the largest marine collection in the world, with more than 80 million specimens), allowing the Smithsonian to offer the most comprehensive exhibition in the country devoted to a global view of the ocean.
